Hibiscus

blue tank top, pink floral Hawaiian sarong

My little sister recently returned from a school trip to Hawaii. She brought me two sarongs, one of which I'm wearing in these pictures, and a floral hair ornament.

Let's talk about nipples for a minute: I think it's absurd that I've been trained to feel embarrassed when they're visible through my shirt. I don't need to wear a bra for any practical reason, because I'm not busty. And yet I'm supposed to add this uncomfortable garment to my daily attire, just for the sake of concealing the fact that I have the same body parts as more than seven billion other people. I refuse to do that. And I hate that I feel like I have to say something, that I have to defend and justify myself. Stupid society with its stupid misogynistic strictures about women's appearances.

  2. That's a good point about bra wearing! I remember when it was time for me to start wearing one, and I kept thinking, why??? My boobs were small, and bras were uncomfortable so I hated wearing them and thought it was pointless. Over the years I've gotten used to it I guess, and now I would definitely be afraid of what people would think if I went out in public without one. It's a shame really! Go you for going against the grain!

  4. I completely agree about nipple shame. What's that all about? Controlling women and women's bodies is what that is about. Good for you!

  5. Pretty! Pretty! Pretty! I love the hibiscus in your hair. I don't get bothered by my nipples poking out, but I get bothered when they're facing different directions. There's nothing worse than headlights misaligned.

    2. Thanks to Karen, my keyboard now has tea in it :-S

You all are too hilarious (and right) for your own good.

Speaking of nipples on show, it's pretty much inevitable with ballet leotards unless you wear a bunch of extra layers underneath (which I don't like to do). One girl had those flower things for a while, but they kind of stood out more than the nipples would have, and looked unnatural, so it kind of defeated the purpose. I do admire her adventurous spirit, however!

I take delight in pointing out that men's nipples are vestigial remnants of the time when, in their early existence, they were briefly female. Because we all were, at the start, and WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU, HMM? :-D

    3. I'm not even sure what "those flower things" are, but I'm intrigued! I'm going to rant about vestigial remnants next time someone bugs me about this =D

    4. They're the little silicone pasties (or whatever the name is) you can get to cover just your nipples. They creep me out a bit, but since I'm a (pauses to translate size to US one) 30-32 D (8-10 D to DD in NZ), I am all about the full bra with structure and underwires (but no padding). I like my girls well strapped in! :-D it is nice to cast the bra off at the end of the day and let them go free though...

  6. ha friends and i were just talking about this. mentioned that even my little kitties have nips. i guess the idea is that it gets people imagine your whole boob if they see nips though and can be distracting? maybe cause a car accident? ha i'm getting carried away but ya bras... i seriously tried on like 15 at the store the other day and left w/ 3 that were actually comfy and then got home and sat down in one and it's not. i've been into little bandeuo tops w/ some stitching for support though lately (i'm anti underwire/padding) but they def help me if i decide to hop around a bit.

  8. PEOPLE HAVE NIPPLES?! WHAT?!?!?!?!?!
Seriously though, I am glad that you do what you find most comfortable.
I remember when I first started wearing a bra. I was about 9 years old and wondered why I had to wear one. Then around a year later I was the only girl in my grade that actually had boobs. It's like they popped up out of no where. I think that bras are more comfortable when doing daily tasks, mostly because of nipple sensitivity and to keep everything well placed. I suppose you could say I was always kind of envious of women with smaller breasts because they didn't have to worry about it as much. Then again, the grass is greener on the other side, yadda yadda.
I remember reading in a book (forgot which one! oh no!) about how breasts aren't as sexualized in a lot of other cultures, and they are for the babies more than anything!

    1. Bahaha, yes they do! Yeah, I always used to wish my breasts were bigger, for obvious reasons, but I've mostly gotten over it. It's so weird the way Western culture treats breasts! People get scandalized by public breastfeeding.

  9. I feel ya about the nipples! I am one of those people who rips off her bra first thing upon arriving home. And I have several "weekend bras" which are basically, let's be honest, bandeau tops or training bras, that I wear when I can't be bothered to wear a proper bra. When I was young and perkier, going bra-less was totally comfortable for me and I did it all the time. Sadly things have progressed to a point where a day without a bra is not so pleasant. On a side note, I came across some images from the 1970s the other day and was reminded how it was kind of normal, and considered sexy rather than outrageous, for women's nipples to show through their clothing. What happened to that plan?
