Becoming Beyonce

Today my mom asked, "Sonya, can I offer an unsolicited comment?" I said, "Okayyy..." She continued, "I don't think the baking soda is working. Your hair doesn't look clean." (Context here.) My reaction:

(Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl. Don't rain on my parade!) I told my mom, "There's supposed to be a greasy period." I fully expect that soon I'll be looking like this:

Honestly I haven't listened to that much of her music, but "Drunk in Love" is my jam. Okey dokey, that's all.

  1. Suggestion: get one of those fantabulous hats from Funny Girl. Problem solved.

    1. TRUE. I need to rewatch that movie and obtain all of Barbra Streisand's outfits.

  2. Non-loaded, just-curious question: how long are you happy to wait for the baking soda trick to get to the Beyonce point? Or do you think you'll try something else soon?

Or do you think it's working already?

I have many questions for those more intrepid than I when it comes to haircare!

    1. I'll probably hang in there for a month or so more. I'll keep y'all updated!

  3. Story plot twist! I totally tried to go no-poo three years ago, and I went around 2 months without using shampoo or conditioner, and I was so sick of my greasy hair that gave up. I used baking soda sparingly (might have contributed). I might have not waited long enough before giving up. I never went back, but I can totally agree that it's better for your hair and natural oils.

    1. Hmm. That's worrisome. Maybe it won't work =P But hey, worth a try, right?

  4. I have such a greasy head already I could never do the no shampoo thing. I have to be seen in public. Plus my mom is a hairdresser and would be pretty appalled if I wasn't washing my hair. I've heard of this working for some people and not working for others. I think it works better for people who naturally don't have grease head after one day of not washing though. Curly haired girls are probably the best candidates for this since they usually have a drier scalp and hair. I wash my hair every day or every other day depending and color it every few weeks and it's never looked fried or unhealthy.

    1. I feel it. Personal biochemistry must be a big factor. I'm actually not worried about hair health, more just interested in trying easy DIY stuff and in favor of cheapness!

  5. I'm few days late in commenting on this (my phone wouldn't let me fill out the comment box) but I'm really curious about this no hair washing thing! I don't know much about it but is your hair suppose to start naturally cleaning it after a while? I know some people have said it's really awesome for bringing out natural hair oils and helping with hair growth but I've never been sure if it was worth trying for.

    1. The idea is that your hair adjusts to not being washed and cuts down on oil production. I honestly don't know if that's realistic or not, haha. That's why I'm trying it for myself!
