Hella Natural

selfie in yellow cardigan, blue lace-print dress

I decided not to take proper photos today because both my yellow cardigan and my blue lace-print dress have shown up in recent outfit posts. The makeup is generic "me but prettier" stuff. In general, I figured a selfie would suffice.

On a different topic, I want to talk about homemade body products. I'm very into easy DIY projects, especially if they indulge my hippie desire to buy the trendiest #OMGorganic ingredients available (e.g. unrefined expeller-pressed coconut oil, which is apparently magical). In that spirit, today I:
  • washed my hair with baking soda, since my giant bottle of shampoo finally ran out. I'm going 'poo-free!
  • washed my face using the oil cleansing method, which I've been doing for a couple of months now. It hasn't affected my acne, but it does feel really nice. My mixture is half-and-half castor oil and grapeseed oil.
  • toned my face with a solution of water and Bragg's apple cider vinegar. I found the instructions on Laurel of Leaves and it's been part of my daily routine for a while. This also hasn't improved my skin except by making it feel prettier. It looks exactly the same.
  • whipped up a batch of deodorant, poured it into an empty stick/container thingy, and put it in the refrigerator to solidify. I scented it with clary sage essence, and I'm on the fence about whether that was a good idea. But this is my first attempt and I'm excited!
  • made baking soda toothpaste. It tastes lightweight gross, but I can deal with that.
In addition, last night I did a simple sugar scrub, which was very exfoliate-y. I'm not even gonna link to a recipe because it's super easy: 1) Combine regular ol' sugar and a non-comedogenic oil in a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio, according to preference. 2) Gently rub the mixture on your face or whatever other part of your body. 3) Rinse it all off with a washcloth and hot water.

So, assuming that you stuck around through my enthusing, is there anything that you're tempted to try? Or do you have suggestions for me?

  1. I've never been much for the shampoo/conditioner/toothpaste etc DIY, but I am intrigued by making my own blush. I saw a post about it somewhere, and I may give it a go at some point. I wanted to try something different to what that post went for, however, so more research may be required...

  2. I've always wondered about homemade shampoo, I heard it's supposed to keep your hair from getting as greasy since you're not stripping the natural oils out. I'm always annoyed at my hair because it gets greasy soo quickly! I'm interested to hear about your experiences with all your homemade products!

    1. I have really grease-prone hair too--I have to wash it every day or it gets truly disgusting--so this is an ambitious project. I'll definitely update y'all!

  4. That is quite the list for one day, congrats! Good luck with the no 'poo. It really isn't fun for the first little while but so worth it afterwards! :) I don't have a lot of recipe suggestions but if you are going all natural I do suggest picking up a bottle of tea tree oil if you don't have that already. I have found it is one of my most used ingredients when doing DIY skin and hair stuff! It works amazing on my acne and clears up all my other skin problems too (I have something called tinea versicolor regularly and it even fixes that).

  5. I ~love!~ the smell of clary sage. Such a favorite of mine. Obsessed. Hope the deo works out for you.

When I was in middle school/high school I did the baking soda toothpaste for nearly a year because of a article I'd read. When my mom found out she was like, 'Honey, you're weird.' (nevermind that it took her a year to realize what I was doing...) Anyway, my point is, you get accustomed to it. I hope you got a new box.

    1. I wore it today and it worked fine! Also the clary sage is growing on me (not literally). I did get a new box of baking soda, but not because I knew that was important. Our old one was just running out.
