Prehistoric Style

The other day I talked about Jurassic Park and mentioned that I wanted to do a paleo-inspiration post. However, I am sad to report that the intersection between steppin' out in style and Michael Crichton's sci-fi thriller is not well-explored, even if you're just talking about the movie. The subject hasn't been completely ignored--Esquire, Lucky, and Film Fashion Film all covered the topic--but I want more! At least there's the delightfully bizarre Paleontology of a Woman fashion show, which is not Jurassic Park-related but does unite clothes and dinosaurs. And I managed to round up several other things that seem related:

  1. When I first saw the title of this post I thought of a class I am taking right now, the pre-history of art! Anyway, totally not related. My boyfriend LOVES Jurassic park and I've even purchased a shirt for him!

    1. Ahhh, you should make him join an outfit post with you while wearing it!

  2. Totally digging this post! (And digging for prehistoric bones in the backyard)
There should definitely be more dinosaur themed stuff!

  3. I kinda have the same issue with nerd clothing for women period. There's nerd clothing that's "adoteably nerdy but still safe and mainstream" like star wars/star trek/doc who or whatever popular tv show for the momment but its difficult to find anything nerdier than that. Stores have no problem with writing women into that safe nerd demographic but when's the last time anyone promo-ed tmnt, firefly, ANY gamer stuff(cause chicks can't be gamers!) or anything a little less mainstream than batman. I suppose this is rambling and a little off topic but its something I've noticed a lot lately and it bothers me. Its okay to wear two cuffs and proclaim you're nerding it up and pretending to be wonderwoman but tank girl is unacpetable. Its just more of the same "supior male nerd/gamer" and chicks should be safe and adoreable mindset. I'm sorry, that was rabling! I read your post, thought "man, i want a lost world tee shirt" and it just spiraled from there. You most have put me in a talkitive mood! ( complete with bad spelling, sorry)

    1. I totally agree with you! It's atrocious that women get put in this little boring box. I definitely want some badass Firefly clothes. I might look into that for a future post.

  4. This post makes me so happy :) I love Jurassic Park (and dinosaurs in general)! My brother and I will sit and watch dino shows on Discovery and NG for hours sometimes. Those first two prints are brilliant!

    1. I know, right? I WANT THEM. And I'm gonna try to stream some dinosaur documentaries on Netflix soon, because I really don't know enough about them!

  5. In culture/mash I'm sure you can find the intersection of anything. Dinosaur fashion? Sure. Fashion is mistress with very peculiar tastes.

I thoroughly enjoyed ALL of this post and it left me wanting MOAR. Particularly of T-Rex in an Ugly Sweater. I wish there was more paleo couture. *le sigh*

    1. We must be the change we want to see, Karen! New idea: dinosaur-themed subscription box specializing in sweaters.

  7. That dinosaur in a sweater pic is amazing! I made a dinosaur hoodie in my highschool years. I cut up a t-shirt to make stuffed little triangles and sewed them into the hood seam! There should definitely be more dinosaur clothes out there.

    1. That sounds so cute! I knew someone whose mom made him a costume as Sonic the Hedgehog in a similar fashion.
