Sea Success

handmade dress, Japanese wave-pattern fabric, white tights, red Mary Jane flats

I made this dress! Finishing a project always peps me up. You may recognize the fabric from a previous creation.

It's astonishing that I'm doing so decently at improvising garments that correspond to my physical form, because my sense of spatial relationships is miserable. For example, I am a notoriously bad driver. Actually, I'm okay at the driving part, even though I go a tad too fast, but parking is the bane of my existence. Not in a regular way, but in the kind of way where the back of my car looks like Superman punched it and I've messed up my neighbor's side panel. It's pretty embarrassing, not to mention expensive. I do try to be careful and not destroy everything around me, but those efforts don't prevent me from knocking into curbs. I'm also navigationally hopeless.

So, yeah, knowing where things are =/= my area of expertise. I'm quite good at basic geometry and stuff like that, but the 3D world is impossible, especially in reverse. And yet, I think this dress is okay!

  1. What I love about this dress is that it almost looks like skirt and top separates in some of the photos. We've talked about liking the matching separates trends. You should consider opening up a boutique of your designs... seriously. Hebden Bridge, the counterculture reminiscent/eco-friendly town that it is, would be smitten.

    1. I originally wanted it to be a top & skirt, but I couldn't get the waistband right so I sewed the pieces together =P Maybe one day! Thank you :)

  3. Aw hey, congrats on making such an awesome dress! Working in 3D is definitely more difficult than just working in flat, so you did great and you're just gonna keep getting better. But for reals, I'm super proud of you here--this looks absolutely amazing! And the pattern you chose is insanely glorious. Woop woop!

  4. Awesome work! :-D And you wore a CARDIGAN with it, which is like the cherry on top of any outfit, as far as I'm concerned ;-)

  6. no no not decent, you did AMAZING!! it seems to fit you perfect & everything looks sewn correctly to me. and the sleeves are perfect, which seems like a hard feat to me, sleeveless seems so much easier. and that fabric of course is just gorgeous. such a fun hip dress you made & great w/ the cardi too (which contrary to the comment above, actually can make outfits less great sometimes, for me).

  7. It's gorgeous. Even if you originally wanted to sew it in a different way, you salvaged it in the end and wound up with a stunning piece. This has character and structure.

Truly, it looks like it could blend right in with the Lim collection you posted or other posh designer collections. It's a wearable work of art.
