Sweater & Stress

white sweater, short blue dress, black tights, black uggs

My grandma gave me these boots years ago. They have been well-loved. So comfy. I am a big fan of comfy. But I will probably wear different shoes when I go out.

blue lace-pattern halter dress

I hate how I look in that picture, but check out the pretty lace print on my dress! Reasons why I don't like the photo: obviously cold, Sonya and the Case of the Disappearing Eyebrows, Sonya and the Case of the Same-Colored Hair and Face, + general stress. Today my parents are hosting a party. Lots of friendly strangers = my nightmare. I'm usually fine with the standoffish ones in structured situations, e.g. on the train, but small talk with random people makes my anxiety shoot through the roof. They're perfectly nice, but I don't know how to relate to them. I think that's why I'm so self-critical right now.

  1. No need to stress girl, everything will work out fine! Parent aged people are not as bad as one may think! Way better than teenagers!
    Good luck ;)

    1. It's not because of their ages--I actually have an easier time with adults than kids my own age. I just have social anxiety.

  2. I get a very similar kind of anxiety when it comes to those situations. It's different in class because there is always work to be done, so it's easy to just go into your own little world and ignore the small talk. But that kind of situation is primed for small talk. I feel you!

I really like this new spot that you've been taking your outfit photos in. Is it right next to where you live? It's a gorgeous backdrop! I agree - the color of the dress is mesmerizing!

    1. Social situations without structure/activities are the WORST. And thank you, I do live nearby!

  3. Small talk is easy - you should take a little comfort in knowing that everyone hates it! The trick is to ask a lot of not very meaningful but tangentailly relevant questions (like 'have you ever been to somewhere tropical?' because it's Winter where you are, or 'What do you like to watch of the Olympics?'). That way, the onus is on the other person to do most of the work answering, it makes you look more engaged than you might be feeling, and you might actually discover a topic that you're comfortable engaging in a full conversation in! Win win win!

Love the top, by the way ^_^ Also, you should totally try filling in your brows. I have the same problem as you, and I just started very lightly going through them with some Lancome Tres Chocolat eyeshadow on the tip of a flat eyeshadow brush, and the difference is wonderful! Just pick a matte shadow or some other prowder product that is close to your actual eyebrow hair colour (often darker than you think), and *very* lightly stroke it through your brows. you can always easily wipe it out or adjust it with your finger or some makeup remover!

    OMG epic comment, sorry :-P

    1. I'm actually pretty good at the functional parts of small talk. It just makes me crazy. And I do my eyebrows some days, but I haven't tried that technique! Thank you!

    2. I thought you probably were, but Syl's Advice Machine whirrs ahead anyway :-D

      Good luck with the eyebrows!

  4. Syl is right, there are a few products you could try for filling in your eyebrows, but start by playing with eyeshadow as she suggests. Then when/if you decide to get a brow pencil or mousse you'll have a better idea on which shade you need. I thought I was a chocolate until I realized how much red was in my brows.
