Mayhem MD

jumbled dresses, Little Women, tan Coach purse

Pictured: jumbled floral dresses from Bon Marche Couture (excellent mail), Little Women (an old favorite to read aloud to my grandmother; my personal book of the moment is The Farm), and my purse (whatever).

I just got back from the hospital. My grandmother was whisked to the emergency room on Friday morning, and finally admitted that night. The malady at hand is Ogilvie's syndrome, also known as "swollen colon and we're not sure why". Luckily she hasn't suffered much pain, and spent a lot of time sleeping. Nevertheless, being in the hospital with tubes and needles stuck in you is a horrible ordeal, especially if you're old and often confused. I was very glad that my dad and I were there to liaise with the various medical people while her situation was in flux.

It's really appalling how much chaos and miscommunication there is in a hospital. We had to explain my grandma's case to a plethora of doctors and nurses. More than vice versa! And I can't believe that it took twelve hours before she was settled in her room for the night, since the decision to admit her was made immediately. Definitely there are reasons why space might be an issue, but given the general context of disorganization and randomness, I'm inclined to chalk it up to that.

The most important thing is that my grandma is doing better, and the doctors predict that she'll be able to go home in a couple of days. As I said, I am very grateful that we live nearby and were able to be there with her. I'm also grateful that my family has relatively easy access to health care. That's not something to take lightly.

The upshot is that I was busy for all of Friday, and half of today. I feel pretty wiped out, and disinclined to go through the rigmarole of taking outfit photos. (Imagine how my poor grandmother must feel! I was only visiting and I'm exhausted!) It'll be more of the same tomorrow. But I miss y'all! When things get regular again, I'll resume my routine. For now, please accept a snapshot or three of my trusty fox sweater and a bright daisy-and-red button-down:

  1. Wow, what an adventure! I'm glad to know your grandma is doing better. I don't think I've ever experienced a fast visit to the hospital, whether personally or while tagging along. They are just really in demand!

  3. Sending your grandma lots of good thoughts! Hopefully she'll be all sorted and out of there soon :-)

Hospitals are funny places - sometimes you wait FOREVER, and then the last time I had to go (needed to be rehydrated after food poisoning, delightfully) I was admitted and dealt with so fast I actually felt guilty... until I saw that three of the other people in the ward were in for rugby injuries!

    1. Rugby is a ridiculous sport. I don't understand men. If I had a son, I wouldn't even let him play football! I saw too many classmates get injuries that will be bothering them until they die.

      Thank you <3

I completely understand the frustrations of having to re-explain everything. Sounds like the system they are going by isn't great for communication, like you stated.

    1. I keep feeling like I could design a better system, but I'm sure it's all more complicated than I realize. Anyway, thank you!
