Fishnets are an interesting thing.
I often say that one of the reasons why I like fashion so much is that clothes encompass both art and utility (as do pottery, architecture, etc). But clearly that's not the whole of it. Items like these stockings--or jewelry, for that matter--only have value in terms of aesthetics. Wearing them may further some social purpose, but it doesn't perform a material function.
That is an opaque way to put it. Allow me to rephrase: I like how these stockings look, and I relish the disconnect between their ~naughty~ reputation and my homey style. But fishnets aren't doing anything to keep me warm.
Even if I ignore the mystery of what makes something visually pleasing, I am still left to wonder: why is it so enjoyable that fishnets are incongruous with my current persona? Perhaps it makes me feel powerful to be able to influence people's impressions of me, or at least perceive myself as doing so.
Anyway... I should pose in front of the woodshed more often. It was a bit breezy today, as you can see.

That necklace is such a pretty piece! I love the unexpected twist the fishnets give to your outfit :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marisa!
DeleteLove the backdrop & your necklace is gorge :)

Thank you too, Emma!
DeleteBusiness on top, party on the bottom! (Hope you like my sense of humor.) >_>
ReplyDeleteI think it's cute how you paired the delicate knit white top with black fishnets. It's these unexpected pairings that I love about your style.
There are other things too that serve no real purpose but are completely for the looks of it... like painting nails. If it makes you feel good about yourself, then it serves a purpose, does it not? :)
LOL, like an outfit mullet! Perfect.
DeleteI agree that the feeling makes it worth it.
Heh, my one problem with fishnets is that they're draughty too! :-D I love the dress and the necklace!
ReplyDeleteI think, when paired with an outfit that otherwise leans 'pretty/cute', fishnets add sort of a grunge edge that adds texture to the whole look. I like crochet tights for the same reason!
Yes, exactly. And thank you!
DeleteThis dress is super cute and I love the fishnets on you! I have never been bold enough to wear them without colorful tights underneath, they simply feel too racy for me. Envious of all girls that can rock them!
ReplyDeleteHeh, thank you!
DeleteThe tights look awesome on you! I tried fishnets on once to try and go for a sexy look but it ended up looking really, really bad. They also made my already larger legs look even larger so its a no-go for me!
ReplyDeleteAw, bummer! Maybe you'll give them another try at some point and like them better.
DeleteThe fishnets are so incongruent, they're startling. Definitely unexpected. Fishnets have their reputation because many of the smaller nets create an optical illusion which is hypnotic. Sexy.
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I didn't know that. Something to slip on my lengthy list of possible post topics: history of fishnets.
DeleteLove the patterns on that dress! <3

Me too! It was a gift from my mom.
DeleteI love the unexpectedness of seeing you in fishnets. I think you're right in that they do tend to have naughty connotations, which is why utilizing them for everyday fashion is bold. Loving it!
ReplyDeleteExactly right. Thank you!
DeleteLove the look! Super cute!
