I felt really pretty today. I haven't put on makeup in a couple of weeks, and seeing myself in the mirror with defined eyes and red lips made me think, "Whoa, I'm definitely cute!" I wish I could sustain that happy fizz throughout my regular ol' lip-balm-and-nothing-else days.
You know "Teenage Dream"? It's one of the few Katy Perry songs that I like, although Glee's version is way better. (I'm not tryna hate on Katy Perry--nah, I totally am.) The first line goes, "You think I'm pretty, without any makeup on." I want to be able to say that to myself.
Feeling pretty all the time, barefaced or no, is something I've been striving toward for more than a year. Learning a self-confident attitude takes a lot of time and effort. Sometimes I get discouraged, but then I remind myself how much healthier I have become during the process.
I bought this dress for like $5 from the tiny thrift shop in Point Reyes Station. White linen is such a ~classic~ summer material, and the cut is simple without being boring. Interesting minimalism is my new favorite aesthetic. I also love that the fabric is heavy without being stifling! Wearing it feels like stepping into the cool circle of shade underneath a big tree.

ReplyDeleteWorking on feeling pretty is an excellent aim. I also think its corollary is to be okay with *not* feeling pretty sometimes. It's great to strive for it, but if we fail, it's not the end of the world.

DeleteCan't believe I missed this post! I love this combo - it's like summer gothic! Gorgeous <3 I'm glad you felt pretty in this, because you totally should. I think you should keep that last photo especially (or any photo of you that you like) in your phone or wallet, so that you can look at it when you're feeling less than pretty, and be reminded of how gorgeous you are. It's not narcissism, it's a memory aid :-) If you fall into a pond while staring adoringly at your reflection...then it's probably narcissism ;-).
