HYFR

Before I say anything else, I want to thank everyone who sent good wishes to my grandma! (Context here.) She's on the mend and hopefully will be able to go home in a couple of days. Your support and positivity blows me away when I mention a trial or tribulation.

On a completely unrelated note, my gentleman friend has got me stuck on a Drake kick, because he plays the albums in his car. (The above picture is from Drake's Instagram, which I don't actually follow because I prefer my feed to be full of Etsy shops, but whatever.) X and I are both interested in narrative analysis, brand identity, blah blah blah intellectual wankery blah blah blah. In the same vein, we did a lot of fan-flailing over Yeezus.

Caveat: I don't appreciate lyrical misogyny and hearing slurs like "bitch" tossed around, but at this point I've accepted that I have to resign myself to being constantly degraded if I want to listen to any kind of mainstream music. It's a cross-genre problem. Rap and hip hop are no worse than, say, indie rock.

Anyway, in case you're interested in catchy sad-kid tunes, here are my favorite songs from Drake's latest album, Nothing Was The Same: "Furthest Thing", "Started From The Bottom", and "The Language".

  2. This is where I miss the GenX GenY bridge (I'm middle-y) because I never picked up Drake. I mean I'm aware who he is, but there's no ~flails!~ But I think I really wanted to comment on the bitch thing. As a feminist I think I should be angry with the word usage, but context means a lot to me. If a girlfriend said, 'Awww, bitch you are so fucking sweet, I heart you so hard.' I would be tots okay with that. Except that maybe, heart is not a verb.

    1. Hahaha, I will accept "heart" as a verb! Yeah, I agree, context is everything.

  3. I cannot stand the lyrics to most modern (mainstream) music of any genre. *waves Zimmer frame, shakes fist at cloud, etc*

Mostly I think it's because (even if degrading language is not an issue), all they ever seem to do these days is write one or two lines of chorus and just repeat that over and over for 3 minutes.

    1. Katy Perry is a particularly egregious offender on that front. *shakes fist with you*
